DRUNK ELK S/T reissue on House Rules coming soon

While we had been kicking around the idea of releasing records for a little why, it was this review of Drunks Elk's self title debut tape in Negative Guest List penned by the late Brendon Annesley that kicked our ass into gear. Word is that tape is going to be reissued on vinyl by House Rules Records, which is run by the same culprits behind Goaty Tapes. We will be getting a small stack for the distro that should be available soon. Till then, dig Brendon's review:

Gorgeous and engaging amphibious textures from the comfort of your own living room. In the words of the man himself: "as i stood by this pond on my first hot, humid night in kroombit, after a long drive from brisbane, my ears distorted with an intensity i've never experienced before or since due to the sonics of the earth. a band of dusky toadlets, northern banjo frogs, eastern dwarf tree frogs, rocket frogs, cane toads. these are the sounds of the wet season, recorded in february, 2016." 

Vavenge "Vavenge III" CS
Nick Dan (xNoBBQx, Antipan, Galah Galah Galah, etc) and Nicola Morton (Bad Intentions, Life Groove Orchestra, Club Sound Witches, etc) lead a dual synth/coed affected vocal approximation of what pop music might sound on Jupiter. Where the gravity reduces sound to a thick weighty stew.   Anthony Guerra (Love Chants, Mysteries Of Love, etc) drags a bass bluntly through the sludge while Matt Earle's (xNoBBQx, Muura, etc) sampled percussion adds an arrhythmic logic to the proceedings.

Mournfully heady and spaced out jams on this new live recording from. Beefhart meets Partch filtered through Ayler in Lorrach/Paris.

Two Poor Boys "The Final Session-July 2009" CDr

Bouzouki-centric improvised anthems where plodding, let the notes just dissolve type groves bubble over into chaos.  Sometimes the repetitive ripples gather into what be called a song in certain circles.

Claustrophobic large group industrial grade improv drones from this longstanding Brisbane collective.

Regler LP Coming Soon

Quemada is excited to announce the release of a new material from Regler.  Regler is the workings of Mattin (Billy Bao and a thousand other projects and collaborations) on guitar and Anders Bryngelsson (Brainbombs) on drums. Over the course of five releases on five different labels, Mattin and Anders had sought to mimic, distill ,and distort a different musical genre using the barest of instruments and the slimmest of guiding principles.  The game is to reduce the genre to a simple rule and the follow that rule without change for however long the release’s medium will allow.  The results are the most maximal and immersive form minimalism we’ve heard in some time. 

So far the boys have undertaken dub, d-beat, free jazz, noise core, harsh noise wall and classical music.  This new LP on Quemada tackles techno and drone with the help of Henrik Andersson on bass.  The results for both are as meditative as they are disorienting.  Techno (Regel #6) sounds like a recording made just outside the club played back at top volume in a padded room for an audience of one as the lights gradually fade in and out.  Drone (Regel #7) sounds like a recording the inside of a florescent light bulb played in a metal shack during an ice storm. Beautiful.

Fall Update, Part II

Prepare yourselves for the impending release of new material from Lynton Denovan’s solo project Sacred Product. Our man Lynton has being laying riff damage over Melbourne for years on a single minded mission to blunt the senses and kill the brain cells in bands like the sorely missed Satanic Rockers and current miscreants Assetstripper. All the while, our man has kept up his monumental solo project, Sacred Product.  

And let me tell you, $ A Ride is the definitive Sacred Product record.  Caustic observations that encapsulate the mundane struggle of the  modern man from calling in sick to drunk driving your bicycle into a river.  These are our anthems. Lynton played every damn thing on the record, drew the cover and sacrificed the all goats needed to birth this creature into the world.  Go ahead, call in sick, pull the shades, revel in it.  Available in the store and elsewhere on November 6th.  

Fall Update, Part 1

Know its been quiet here in Quemada headquarters, but got we two new records this fall.

First up is a prickly Greymouth 12inch. The duo of Mark Sadgrove (guitar) and Mark Anderson (drums) are a couple of New Zealand expats based in Japan with only a handful of releases to document their decade or so existence. So, we suppose its excusable if you’re not in the loop. The best way to describe them to a neophyte is to image a Back from the Grave band that was weened on Operation of Sonne and fronted by a teenage Robert Ashley. THAT would make some sense. But it doesn’t come close to describing the sound one hears in the throes of a white knuckled fever dream, now does it? Available in the store and elsewhere on November 6th(-ish) and watch this space for Part II of the update....

Late Spring Distro: All Gone

Just picked up a couple seriously great tapes from All Gone to help up ride out the Spring. Get them in the store. 

Band Without A Name CS: We were all bummed about the passing of Roachclip. This tape is attempt from most of them dudes to do something “post-roachclip.” Guess it didn’t stick for em. Hell they couldn’t even come up with a band  name. They DID manage a “recording session” and deemed it worthy for wider circulation. Let me tell you, we’re damn lucky they did so. Yeah, there are some of those classic Roachclip flourishes, but these are some confused,  messy dirges, full of barbs, that sometimes bring to mind Los Llamarada and veer into Fuckin' Flyin' A-Heads territory.  Get dumb. $7.50 

Blue Suede Platforms S/T CS: Flamboyantly downcast pop featuring tortured sensitive yelpins a’ la the first Frogs record. Like a resurrected Jack Smith fronting a London home recording outfit from the late 70s.  Think this is the second tape from this oddball Liverpool group. Here's hopin for tons more. Absolutely killer.   $7.50

Scrabbled “Live” CS (AB 67)

Scrabbled’s debut tape on Virtual Cool completely won us over with its woozy anthems and wobbly punkish jabs. This here tape of live performances is a worthy follow up.  The vitriol is more up front on this one and one can SEE the anger and frustration on the two (!!!) versions of New Pig City, but the pop sensibilities are still very much intact. Best tape we heard since the last Scrabbled tape. Rumors abound of a full length on an American label.  $8

They Spunks “A Sporran of Carrots” CS (AB 68)

Psychotic back porch jams from Auckland of the highest order. Perfect for beer and horseshoes. They Spunks have been playing around for a while playing around for a couple years now. Hard to believe its taken this long for a recording to surface. The more surprising when you take into account the pedigree of the boys in the band (members of Axemen, Pumice, Constant Pain). $8

Sam Bakers “At Home” CS (AB 62)

Future anthropologists are gonna have quite the time making sense of this one. Hell, modern ones may scratch their heads too. This debut from Sam Bakers is one of the oddest releases from Albert’s Basement in some time.  Billed by the label as a comedy album, Bakers, a former member of Drunk Elk, delivers a feverish collage of the witticisms and/or delusions accompanied by a TV with bad reception and an AM radio.  $8

Brando's Island on Million Dollar Records

Quick distro update. Just got a small stack of the debut single from Brando's Island (Melbourne) in the store on Million Dollar Records.  No guitars to be found on this one. Just drums, some synth and a vibraphone?! The songs mine the postpunk ground of the Pop Group with some early Killing Joke vapors seeping through the floorboards. Which is to say its as catchy as it is grim. The b side, Auto Warfare, is the obvious hit (check it out below), but its the darker A side is whats getting the most spins in the Quemada offices lately.  Features members of Pathetic Human, Flat Fix, Velvet Whip and Chrome Dome. Dig in

Massive Update: New Release, New Store, New Distro

Quemada and our friends Albert's Basement are happy to announce the release of a 12"EP, "Might Not Look Like it to You" from Melbourne's Elli and Bev.

Elli & Bev is the new pop band of Melbourne’s Natalie K (The Enclosures) and Karl von B (Horse Mania, A Band Called Life, Hammering The Cramps, Mad Nanna). "Might Not Look Like It To You" is their statement of ecstasy in all it’s foul forms. Starkly simple and gravely earnest, but  never humorless. Imagine the naivety and the pop sensibilities of the Tall Dwarfs worked through the early Fad Gadget records and you may get close.If your're in Australia (or close to it) get it from Albert's Basement. They Got No Legs, Bodies Like Eggs: End of Summer Updates

Just got a nice stack of tapes in the store from hot shot new Australian label Virtual Cool out of Brisbane. 

Welcome to Pig City is an amazing new tape from Scrabbled. Shambling anthems with healthy chips on their shoulders. Somewhat reminiscent a more caustic Eyes Rind era Garbage and Flowers with the pop sensibilities of say, um, Clag. On this recording, Scrabbled is a veritable Brisbane all star team featuring members of X Wave, Muura, Extrafoxx Per Purpose, etc etc, etc. The captain of the ship, the indefatigable Bek Moore (Clag) keeps a loose but sure grip on the helm. This was on heavy repeat in MP3 format this summer at Quemada HQ and we’re thrilled to be able to play it all proper like. Comes with a free download.  $8.50

Quemada is happy to announce the release of a new single from Detroit’s Roachclip.-the long awaited follow up to their excellent first LP, Discovery Park of last year. On this seven inch the ‘clip have retreated back into the murky garage from whence they were conceived and deliver two sides of primo paranoid psych rock. Imagine Kim Fowley and Bill Direen working out their bad vibes over an old Tascam in a mid-western basement.  The flip pours on some sugar, albeit thick and syrupy-just like we like it.

Gloomy doom pop, a guitar workout that follows Jane into Occupied Europe, a mass transit travelogue haunted by the Instant Automatons, and some old fashioned, crispy Satanic grooves.  Old habits die hard.

Sacred Product Double 7" Coming Soon

Quemada is unabashedly fond of mass transportation. We can think of no more efficient way for going where you feet can’t get you. Yeah, we know: sometimes its more crowded that it should be, or the trip takes longer than usual due to an accident or malfunction (things that NEVER happen on freeways).  More often it works like you expect.
Sometimes, its downright pleasant. Our lives are stressful enough and taking a bus or a train affords you the ability to get where you’re going without having to make the  thousands of split second, life or death decisions needed to get there in a car (or bike). It’s a modern miracle. Read a book, listen to some tunes, turn off the noggin and stare out the window. Hell, take a nap. You deserve a break.

Fall Distro: Drunk Elk "Oceanus Procellarum" cassette

Well, we were just starting to feel like normal, well-adjusted types around here. Able to make convincing small talk with friends and coworkers. We were even being invited places again.  Yeah, so I guess its a good thing we have a new Drunk Elk tape to knock us down a few pegs. Catchy enough to keep you humming along along but unsettling enough to make you feel like a low life creep if someone catches you listening to it. This is the follow up to the excellent Under Neon Light LP from a while back (itself a follow up from their excellent, cough cough, Quemada single).  The tape comes to us from Dave Elk's new Doctor Guten Tag label. Its in an edition of 50, or so we're led to believe. Of which we have but a very short stack. Listen HERE.

Wormword Grasshopper is going to be giving this tape a short run vinyl treatment soon and there's rumors of even more new Drunk Elk in the works. Looks like we'll be staying in for a while.
